Spot on Back of Tooth

QUESTION:

I have always had this spot at the bottom center of my tooth on the backside. Right where the tip of your tongue is. By spot I mean it seemed the tooth kinda stuck out of my gum. Today I was eating and it fell off. It was part of my tooth. So now part of my back bottom center tooth has a hole. I don’t know if it’s an emergency or not but it just randomly fell off. I plan on going to a dentist Monday. People are telling me different things including the tooth may be pulled. Just for information purposes I am very self conscious about my teeth. I brush and mouthwash twice a day. The only problem is I don’t floss because I can’t handle sticking string between my teeth. I hope that’s enough info. Please help. Thank you.

ANSWER:

It sounds like you have broken part of a tooth. Depending on the reason and severity of the fracture the tooth may only need a filling, it may need a crown, it may need a root canal, post core and crown possibly even some minor gum reshaping, or it may need removal and replacement with a bridge or implant. The fact that you are not in much discomfort is good. The best thing to do is see the dentist and get their opinion. If they take an x-ray or photo and you want to send that to me via the website I can take a look and give you my thoughts, but start by seeing your dentist.

Hope this helps.
