An Appliance which is fixed to dental implants which can only be removed by the dentist. The patient cannot remove the appliance.
Fixture
Another name for implant.
Flange
The gum colored acrylic on a removable denture, which is designed to replace the missing natural gum tissue.
Flipper
An appliance made of acrylic which is usually used as a temporary tooth replacement for a missing single anterior tooth. It is really an all acrylic temporary removable partial denture, they can be made to replace multiple teeth if needed.
Fluoride
A naturally occurring substance which is added to water, toothpastes and some mouth washes and used for strengthening the hard surfaces of the teeth. It is in corporate into the enamel and dentin of the teeth and makes them more resistant to decay.
Fluorosis
A harmless over-exposure to fluoride during tooth development. It makes the teeth very resistant to decay, but may result in discoloration of the tooth.
Frialit
A brand of dental implants popular in the early 2000’s.
Full Denture
An appliance which replaces all of the teeth. Traditionally this has been a removable appliance, but now with the success of dental implants they may be fixed on top of implants.
Furcation
The anatomic area between the roots of multi-rooted teeth. These include most molars and some premolars.
