Edentulism
The condition of missing a tooth or teeth.
Edentulous
Means toothless. Fully edentulous means all the teeth are missing. Partially edentulous means only some of the teeth are missing.
Edentulous Site/Space
The area along the jaw or ridge which was previously occupied by one or more teeth.
Emdogain
Proteins derived from the developing tooth cells of a pig embryo’s which are used as a biomimetic to aid wound healing.
Enamel
The hard outer shell of the tooth. This is the part of the tooth which is visible in the mouth. Enamel is harder and more brittle than bone or the underlying dentin.
Endo
Term used to denote root canal treatment.
Endodontics
The disciple of dentistry which addresses problems affecting the pulp or nerve of the tooth. It is a recognized dental specialty of the ADA.
Endodontist
A dentist who has done special training in diseases which affect the pulp of the tooth. They spend an extra two years after dental school in an accredited residency learning to treat these diseases.
Epithelium
The cells which make up skin.
