The portion of the tooth which holds the tooth in the jawbone. It is not usually visible as it is located below the gum. It is composed of the pulp tissue which is surrounded by dentin which is surrounded by a thin layer of cementum. The cementum connects the tooth to the jaw bone via the periodontal ligament.
Root Canal
A dental procedure which removes the inflamed, infected, or necrotic (dead) pulp from the tooth and fills it with a stabile and inert material called gutta-percha.
Root Planning
The process of cleaning the outer surface of the roots of the teeth. This is usually the first treatment for periodontal disease and is aimed at removing the buildup of bacteria, calculus and the toxins they produce from the root surface so the gums can heal and reconnect to the tooth root.
Scaling
The process of removing the hard mineralized deposits (i.e. tarter or calculus) from the crown and root surfaces.
Sealant
A resin material which is bonded onto the tooth’s surface in order to protect the enamel from cavities.
Sinus
Air filled spaces in the bones of the head which are lined with a very thin layer of skin which function to filter out debris we inhale and to make our skull lighter.
Sinus Graft
Also known as: Sinus Elevation, Sinus Augmentation, Sinus Lift, Osteotome Sinus Lift, and Internal Sinus Lift. It is the addition of bone graft material between the skin lining the maxillary sinus and the boney walls of the maxillary sinus to create sufficient bone volume for the placement of a dental implant.
Socket Preservation
Also known as a socket graft or a ridge preservation graft. It is the placement of bone graft material into a fresh extraction socket to speed it healing and prevent loss of bone volume as the socket heals.
Socket(s)
The hole in the jawbone that the tooth sits inside. An Extraction socket is the hole in the jawbone that remains after a tooth is removed.
Soft Tissue Graft
A catch all term for any transplant of soft tissue from one area of the mouth to another, or the transplant of donated soft tissue into a deficient area in the mouth.
