The body’s reaction to a localized irritant or injury. It is the body’s attempt to destroy, dilute or wall of the area or irritant in order to protect the rest of the body. It is characterized by some or all of the following redness, swelling, pain, fever (or a localized elevation in temperature), and loss of function. It may be an acute (immediate) reaction or a chronic (continuous over time) reaction.
