Crown Lengthening

QUESTION:

What is Crown Lengthening and is it important?

ANSWER:

Crown lengthening is a procedure to expose more tooth structure so a properly fitting crown can be made. It is needed when a tooth is so broken down that there is not enough of it remaining to hold a crown. Tooth which is below the gum and maybe bone is exposed via a minor surgical procedure and after the gum heals the dentist has more gum to work with to help support the new crown. Usually teeth which need crown lengthening are compromised teeth and the dentist is trying to do everything to save the tooth. The alternative to crown lengthening is removal of the tooth and replacement with either a fixed bridge or an implant. If you would like a second opinion on your particular situation I have a friend in Gainseville who would be happy to see you. Let me know if you would like his information. Unfortunately I do not know anyone close to the Villages. Also look up ferrule in the site glossary.

Hope this helps,
